Does Brownsville Have Good Gyms?
Brownsville NY has gym chains, a local CrossFit gym, and a large fitness and recreation center. And due to its central location in Brooklyn, there’s also a good choice of gyms near Brownville for all training styles and needs.
Gyms In Brownsville: 5 Best Options
Brownsville Recreation Center – Best For General Fitness
- Address: 1555 Linden Boulevard, Brooklyn, NY
- Hours: Monday–Friday 7am–10pm, Saturday 8am–12am, Sunday 8am–4pm
- Price: $150 for 1 year or $75 for 6 months
- Sign up fees: None
- No lock-in contracts: Not available
- Free trial: None
- Group fitness: Limited
Brownsville Recreation Center is the most popular spot in this neighborhood. And it’s not just a fitness center offering gym facilities, group fitness classes, and a pool, but a place to play sports and socialize thanks to its indoor court and sports field.
What Are The Gym Benefits?
This fitness center is ideal if you want more than a gym. It has a large lap pool, basketball court, and sports field, along with a group fitness schedule that includes cardio, strength boot camp, soca dance & step aerobics, PiYo (Pilates and yoga), and sit & get fit classes.
So it’s great for general fitness, especially if you’re a casual gym user or senior citizen. Plus it’s local, which is good if you live in Brownsville. And because it doubles as a recreation center, it also has regular social events that’ll help you feel part of Brownsville’s community.
What Do You Need To Know Before Purchasing A Membership?
The adult (age 25-61) memberships are $150 for 1 year or $75 for 6 months. Seniors (over 61) can have 1 year for $25. Gym use, pool access, group fitness classes, and other facilities are all included.
So there are no monthly memberships, but the good news is that the memberships let you access all NYC Parks recreation centers – and there’s a host of locations to visit around Brooklyn and Queens.
Are There Any Drawbacks?
Some won’t like that this is a recreation center, which can mean lots of people and noise. This gym only offers the basic machines and equipment too, and the classes are limited: around 3 daily classes on average.
And, of course, there are no monthly memberships. It’s cheap, though, and the 6-month membership doesn’t cost more despite the shorter term.
Who Should Work Out Here?
If you like swimming and only need basic gym facilities and group classes, this place is cheap, convenient, and ideal for feeling part of the local community. But if you need better gym facilities, more classes, and don’t like “busy” community centers, I’d skip this one.
Planet Fitness Brooklyn Rockaway Ave – Best Budget Gym For Beginners
- Address: 441 Rockaway Ave, Brooklyn, NY
- Hours: Monday–Thursday 24 hours, Friday 12am–10pm, Saturday–Sunday 7am–7pm
- Price: $10/mo for Classic membership, $24.99 mo for PF Black Card
- Sign up fees: $49 for Classic
- No lock-in contracts: Available
- Free trial: 1 day
- Group fitness: Limited
Some just need somewhere to start and don’t want to spend a lot on a gym membership. That’s what Planet Fitness is great for. This location’s in the heart of Brownsville too, with a class schedule that offers more classes than most other Planet Fitness gyms!
What Are The Gym Benefits?
Planet Fitness Rockaway Ave has all the essential gym machines and equipment. So whether you’re looking to lose weight, build muscle, or just get a feel of the gym, this is a good place to go without feeling judged – since most members are new or casual.
The big perk here is the extra classes (up to 10 on weekdays: upper/lower body, core, HIIT, circuit, and strength), which is more than most PF gyms. It’s open 24 hours 4 days a week, with more PF gyms to access around Brooklyn and Queens if you get a PF Black Card!
What Do You Need To Know Before Purchasing A Membership?
You have two options: $10/mo (Classic membership) to visit one Planet Fitness gym or $24.99/mo (PF Black Card) to visit any location with access to all facilities, such as massage chairs and tanning.
Classic membership has a 1-year contract and $49 sign-up fee, however, unlike PF Black Card which has no commitment (it’s easier to cancel).
Both memberships here have a $49 annual fee.
Are There Any Drawbacks?
While there are more daily classes here, these are small group classes (up to 5 people), so slots are limited. Planet Fitness is a popular budget gym too, so equipment quality is average and the gyms can get crowded.
Who Should Work Out Here?
If you’re a beginner or casual gym-goer who only needs a basic budget gym, PF Rockaway Ave is a good choice – especially if you also want to join classes. But if you want better gym equipment and have a bigger budget to work with, consider other options first.
Crunch Fitness Crown Heights – Best Cheap No Contract Gym
- Address: 842 Lefferts Ave, Brooklyn, NY
- Hours: Monday–Friday 5am–11pm, Saturday–Sunday 7am–9pm
- Price: Memberships from $19.99/mo
- Sign up fees: $60 for monthly memberships
- No lock-in contracts: Available
- Free trial: 1 day/3 days
- Group fitness: Extensive
Looking for a cheap gym membership but don’t want to commit? Crunch Fitness offers a cheap base membership that doesn’t come with a contract. Like Planet Fitness, Crunch offers all the basics but with better strength training and functional fitness facilities.
What Are The Gym Benefits?
Despite being a budget chain gym, Crunch Fitness offers weightlifting stations (yep, with bumper plates) and fully equipped functional fitness areas, called the HIITZone. So it’s the best cheap gym around if you like powerlifting, weightlifting, CrossFit, or functional HIIT.
This location also has tanning and HydroMassage facilities, plus a large group studio. And the classes include yoga, HIIT, abs, Zumba, chisel, slow burn—to name a few—with up to 8 classes per day. The best thing? Membership is cheap and doesn’t come with commitment.
What Do You Need To Know Before Purchasing A Membership?
Crunch offers three membership options:
- Base – single-club access, gym only with no classes
- Peak – access to all Crunch gyms and group fitness classes
- Peak Results – access to all Crunch gyms with group fitness classes (including advanced HIIT classes), HydroMassage and tanning facilities, plus guest privileges
So what’s the cost?
Base is $19.99/mo or $120 for one year with a $69.99 annual fee. Peak is $24.99/mo or $200 for one year with a $59.99 annual fee. And Peak Results is $34.99/mo or $310 for one year with a $49.99 annual fee
So the monthly memberships have no annual fee, but do come with a $60 sign-up fee.
Are There Any Drawbacks?
It’s cheaper to pay a year upfront, but Crunch still hits you with an annual fee that’s most expensive for the cheapest membership (Base) just to get more money out of you. You can’t escape fees either as there’s a $60 sign-up fee for all monthly memberships!
Crunch is also a super popular gym chain, so expect it to get crowded at peak times.
Who Should Work Out Here?
If you want weightlifting equipment, functional fitness facilities, more group classes, and no commitment, Crunch is the best choice out of all the gym franchises. Serious weightlifters will want to look elsewhere, however, as well as gym regulars who don’t like crowds.

Drop-ins are $25 each and class packs are likely available too.
Are There Any Drawbacks?
There are no early/mid-afternoon classes and some days have fewer classes than other days (2 morning classes or 3 evening classes). It’s also smaller than most CrossFit gyms – a drawback if you’d prefer a large group atmosphere.
Who Should Work Out Here?
Beginner and intermediate CrossFitters who prefer smaller CrossFit gyms. But if you’re a die-hard CrossFitter looking for a big, fully equipped facility with a large member community, you’ll want to look at other CrossFit gyms.
