Oh wait, did that just really happen?
I love Darryl's class in a way that's illegal in most states. I set my alarm for 630am Saturday morning just to sign up for his Sunday morning class. It's a sick- yet awesome- addiction. Darryl will always leave you dripping in sweat and feeling like you've just attended a rave. It's the ultimate feel good class.
So why the 2.5-stars? I had to knock 2.5 stars off- and to be honest, I'm being kind- after the car-accident-of-a-class I took on Monday.
A girl walked in just as class began to start and had some trouble with her bike. When she couldn't fix it, she asked Darryl for help. Now, should she have raised her hand at the beginning of class when he asked if anyone needed anything? Sure. But it was not more than a minute after Darryl asked when she raised her hand.
And that, my fellow spinsters, is when it got awkward.
Darryl abruptly stopped the song and the class to make an example of this girl (who was at her very first spin class too). He mocked and berated her on the mic as the class watched in silence. I felt so bad for her and awkward at this exchange that I almost left the class. I can understand his frustration, but that doesn't mean you can just poop on someone that looked so frightened to be there to begin with.
So, Darryl, I love your class. You can spin it like no one else, but that doesn't give you the right to treat someone that way. You're better then that!

PointsHe did almost the exact same thing at 76th & Amsterdam earlier this year-- turned out to be the last class he taught at that club. I also love Darryl's energy but this diva stuff is ridiculous. Remember, folks, it's just a class. Not everyone is there to have a life-changing experience every single time. Sometimes it's an accomplishment just to make it there and get through the class.

PointsThere are always two sides to a story. my experience with Darryl has always been a positive one. And he is the best spinning teacher in NYC and I have taken a lot of them.

PointsI don't understand this review. You love his class and he excels far beyond all others yet he "berated" someone? I think you need to look up the definition of "berate". the class is not about one person, its for EVERYONE. I have never seen Darryl "berate" or deliberately single out anyone. He is there to inspire, not insult. You should know since you clearly find his class inspiring.

PointsI am surprised by this review. I was actually in the class when he turned off the music. He had just explained that the warm up was intense and that it would consist of 5 second intervals . Who in their right mind would call out to an instructor once the class had started and he was counting down ? The only way he could deal with this was to stop the music because he couldn't do both. I would also point out that the majority of the class were irritated by her need for attention at a totally inappropriate time.

PointsI understand this review because a similar, but even worse incident happened in soho oct 20. He asked me to never come back to his class again. I'm still unsure of what i did wrong. I wasn't late, didn't ask for help, tried my best and still left the class crying. Never want to com back again.

PointsDid you ask why. I have to say Robert Pennino is abusive and I don't know why he teaches at Equinox. Gregg Cook has never yelled at anyone. He used to pick on me but that was to motivate me. I'm reading horror stories about the most popular teachers. Don't get why Equinox employs them still
